College soccer: Win streak sees Pirate men finish atop NWAC North

A shutout and a come-from-behind win ran Peninsula men’s soccer team’s win streak to seven and left PC atop the North Region standings as the season drew to a close.

Peninsula got three unassisted first half goals — two from Tim Deser — in a 3-0 whitewash of Everett in Port Angeles on May 24, to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Deser scored at the five- and 12-minute marks, and teammate Yutatsu Taira added a third to cap the scoring.

Alejandro Lopez needed just one save on four Trojan shots to record the shutout.

The win comes on the heels of a 3-1 win over Whatcom on May 18 in Bellingham.

The defending NWAC champion Pirates lost to Whatcom 2-1 on April 15 when the team was hit with a number of red cards. Peninsula won the rematch on May 3, a 2-1 decision, then took the rubber match on the road last week.

The Pirates were down 1-0 at the half and remained down well into the second half before Fernando Tavares, assisted by Keigo Takai, knotted the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute.

In the 79th minute, Kai Biegler scored an insurance goal off an assist to Taira. In the 85th minute, Biegler scored again, with the assist going to Takai.

Peninsula’s Ian Dalton made six saves in goal to pick up the win.

The Pirate men out-scored opponents during this abridged season 25-5.

Meanwhile, PC’s women were scheduled to close the 2021 season at home against Everett Monday but the Trojans canceled because of a number of injuries. Peninsula finished the campaign 7-0, having out-scored foes 26-2.

Officials with the Northwest Athletic Conference decided prior to the season not to host postseason tourneys in light of health restrictions.
