Lions test to prevent glaucoma and diabetes

Free was the word of the day for the Sequim Valley Lions Club on Friday, Sept. 9. Members hosted the Northwest Lions Foundation free health screening in front of Safeway for six hours.
Organizers said 42 people participated and had their blood pressure, vision and hearing tested along with screening for diabetes and glaucoma. No appointment was necessary.
Those with problems were referred to their respective doctors or specialists for further examination. Lions volunteers led the tests with one EMT on the site.
The first health unit came to Sequim in 1997 for two days and served 179 people.
Lions also collected hearing aids and glasses, an ongoing project of the club.
Glasses can be dropped off in boxes at Costco, the Sequim Library, Sequim Senior Activity Center, most eye doctors’ offices and Walmart. Sue Carroll, glasses donation co-coordinator, said in a year they’ve received thousands of glasses from Sequim residents.

The health screening next visits Safeway, 110 E. Third St. in Port Angeles, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
