City makes an offer to public works candidate

A job offer was made Monday to one of the city’s two public work director finalists and they hope to know within a week if he will accept it, Interim City Manager Linda Herzog told the city council at its Monday night meeting.

Then in two weeks a representative from Waldron & Co., the city’s Seattle-based search firm, will discuss the city manager search with the council, she said.

Waldron & Co. received 30 applications for the position that has been vacant since Jim Bay retired in April 2008. The field of 18 was narrowed to seven semifinalists earlier this month.

In November, the council hired Waldron and Co. to search for both a city manager and a public works director.

Herzog said the two public works director finalists toured city facilities on Monday and also were interviewed by five senior staff members.

Then both candidates had lunch with about 40 city staff that turned into an impromptu interview session, which was "totally unplanned but very successful," she said.

Then they each provided a writing sample and gave a 15-minute presentation to a mock council, she said.
