Register now for Head Start programs

Head Start, Early Head Start and ECEAP are recruiting eligible children and families for the 2023-2024 school year in Sequim, Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Forks, Port Hadlock and Chimacum, representatives with Olympic Community Action Programs (OlyCAP) announced recently.

These preschool programs offer part-day and full-day services for children up to 5 years of age. There are no costs for low-income families or children who may be over the income guidelines but have a special need or disability.

The various programs provide meals, transportation support, educational and social/health services for eligible children without regard to race, gender or national origin. Parent involvement is actively encouraged and is critical to the success of the program, OlyCAP representatives said.

The programs accept applications year-round for all services and maintain ongoing wait lists.

Learn all about ‘Local Food and Local Makers’

“Local Food and Local Makers” is the next presentation of the Civic Minds + Creative Hearts series, set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, at the Port Angeles Fine Art Center (PAFAC), 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Community members are invited to join for an evening of food and drinks, mingling, and presentations inspired by the food related themes from the current PAFAC exhibition, “What’s For Lunch?” Attendees will learn from community professionals about the broader landscape of the local food movement and meet farmers who are “cultivating a more sustainable land ethic and creating art inspired by this work,” organizers say.

Clea Rome, Director of the local Washington State University Extension office, will give an overview of agriculture in the region and how and why local farmers and others are working to build more sustainable localized food systems. Local farmers Rachel Shyles, Jenson, and Melissa Levenstein will join Rome for a panel discussion and will share how their art is informed by their ties to local land, passion for community connection and dedication to sustainable food systems.

Tickets for the event are $15, $12 for PAFAC members and $5 for SNAP recipients. Get tickets pafac.kindful.com/e/local-food-and-local-makers. Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended.

“What’s For Lunch?” is an exhibition of fiber and textile art, featuring works by members of the Peninsula Fiber Artists. See pafac.org.
