Sequim’s Cranksgiving haul tops 1,700 pounds

A bit of chilly weather didn’t stop more than three-dozen participants for turning out to raise funds and food.

The 2023 Sequim Cranksgiving — an annual event held the Saturday before Thanksgiving that sees locals pedal their way to local grocery stores and bring food items to the Sequim Food Bank — saw 43 riders collect 1,701 pounds of food and donate $3,430.

This year’s prizes went to: winning team, 3 Crabbies, with 618 pounds; fastest finisher (pedal bike), Ken Stringer, 18 minutes; fastest finisher (electric bike), Chris Clark, 29 minutes; Megawatt (most weight on ebike), Bill Biery, 139 pounds; Little Kahuna (lightest load), Lee Bowen and Sue Gilleland, 5 pounds each; Big Kahuna (most weight on pedal bike), Steve Resnick, 178 pounds; and, youngest rider, Friendsgiving family, 18 months.

In 13 years, noted organizer Tom Coonelly, the local Cranksgiving even has amassed 19,539 pounds of food and $23,879 for the Sequim Food Bank.

Next year’s event is set for Nov. 23.
