Concert to aid children
Sandi Lockwood is presenting a free benefit concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave. The event is to support work against human trafficking in Cambodia and Thailand. All donations go to Rapha House in Cambodia.
Calling all paddle fanatics
Stand up paddle fanatics and water enthusiasts are in for a treat on Friday, May 2, when Peninsula College’s Magic of Cinema film series screens “That First Glide.” The screening is at 7 p.m. in Maier Performance Hall on the main campus in Port Angeles (1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.) and is co-sponsored by Sound Bikes and Kayaks. Following the film’s screening, Sound Bikes and Kayaks will give a gift certificate for a stand up paddle rental for two for four hours to a lucky drawing winner. The evening also will include a special Q&A session led by Rob Casey, a Seattle-based instructor, guide, photographer and author.
More Backyard Birding
On May 3, “Enjoying Spring Sounds” kicks off the seventh session for 2013-2014 of Backyard Birding. Meet from 10 a.m.-noon at the Dungeness River Audubon Center. Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society members Dow Lambert and Ken Wiersema present locally recorded photos, videos and sounds provided by the birds in local neighborhoods. The program features recent recordings and those introduced in last year’s program.
The final class in the 2013-2014 series is June 7 on the topic “Birds Out of the Nest.” Wiersema discusses vulnerabilities, feeding, needs and lifestyles of backyard birds as they leave their nests.
Families and individuals are invited to attend any or all of the sessions. There is a $5 fee for those over 18 years of age. A complementary one-year membership in OPAS is offered to those who complete five of the seven classes offered each year.
Audition for scholarships
Monday Musical has invited high school senior music students intending to major or minor in music to audition for scholarships on Sunday, May 4, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles. A total of $6,000 in scholarships is awarded, with first place receiving up to $3,000. (The first place award is in honor of the late Richard McCoy, an active part of Monday Musical.)
Auditions begin at 1:30 p.m. Students perform a classical piece of no more than 10 minutes for three professional musicians, who will give a short critique before judging the winners.
