Larue Born turned 105 on Friday, March 20, and in celebration the Sequim Dairy Queen filled up with friends and family. If you do the math, she’s been around since 1910.
“It feels quite normal,” Born said in reference to turning 105.
Born has celebrated her birthday at the local Dairy Queen for years, Marci Tolonen, longtime DQ employee, said. As a birthday gift, Tolonen used a photo she took of Born from her 104th birthday to make a custom jar of Smucker’s jam.
“She’s an amazing person,” Born’s son Ken, said. “To have her here is a super blessing for my brother and I and anyone else that knows her.”
Born was married for more than 70 years and raised their two sons in eastern Washington where the family farmed. She attributes her long life to homemade sauerkraut and exercise.
With a love for adventure, Born pursued backpacking, traveling and water skiing despite not being able to swim. But most of all, she loves to fish, Born’s son Glenn, said.
“She always supported our creativity,” he said.
Among many of her own creative talents, throughout her life Born played both the piano and organ for her church. She also writes and continues to write to this day.
