Detour scheduled on U.S. Highway 101

Travelers heading out along the Hood Canal on U.S. Highway 101 in Jefferson County should take note of a culvert-replacement detour through mid-August.

The highway on July 31 closed a few miles north of Quilcene from Leland Valley Road to Leland Cut Off Road. The road will remain closed until 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21.

Traffic on U. S. Highway 101 will detour onto Center Road. Commercial vehicles will not be able to use this detour because of weight restrictions on the southern end of the detour. They will have to detour between State Route 3 in Shelton and the State Route 104-Hood Canal Bridge.

Because of increased traffic at the intersection of Center Road and SR 104, a temporary traffic signaled will be installed. The speed limit also will be reduced at this location from 60 mph to 35 mph on SR 104 between milepost 4.08 and milepost 4.62.

The closure is needed while contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation replace culverts at two tributaries that feed into Leland Creek. The new, larger culverts simulate a more natural creek environment, which will help make it easier for fish to pass through the area during migration, state officials said.
