Soroptimist See’s sales help fund programs

Soroptimist International of Sequim invites community members to order from the convenience of their homes sweets from See’s Candies. This fundraiser starts Tuesday, Feb. 20, and closes Monday, March 25. Order online at tinyurl.com/SEQseesfunds.

Funds raised support scholarships and awards as well as support to community agencies who align with the Soroptimist mission statement (to provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment).

Snow make-up day added to schedule

Sequim School District students will be in classes on Friday, May 10, after school was canceled for one day in mid-January due to inclement weather.

District leaders also recently approved academic calendars for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years; view them at sequimschools.org.

President Washington to visit Sherwood Assisted Living

In celebration of President’s Day, Sherwood Assisted Living presents “Contemporary Conversations with George Washington” at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, at 550 W. Hendrickson Road.

The event features America’s first president, George Washington, portrayed by Sequim’s Vern Frykholm, a seasoned reenactment actor, in a performance that transports audiences back to the year 1799.

Frykholm, as Washington, will briefly share insights into his presidency and then answer questions about any other aspect of his life. Attendees are encouraged to come with questions.

“We’re delighted to bring this immersive historical experience to our community,” Sherwood administrator Andi Magill said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for all generations to come together on Presidents’ Day.”

“Contemporary Conversations with George Washington” is open to the public at no charge, and no RSVP is required.

Sherwood Assisted Living staff welcomes individuals of all ages, and with no school on Presidents’ Day, organizers hope to see families attending together. Grandparents and parents are encouraged to bring their children for an educational and entertaining experience.

Celebration of life set for Tracy Bloom

A celebration of life is scheduled for Tracy Bloom, a Sequim entrepreneur and volunteer who died unexpectedly at his Sequim home at age 52 on Jan. 22.

The event is set for 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

Bloom developed and owned several businesses, including Tracy’s Insulation, Inc.; Country Acres Early Learning & Child Care, and Tracy & Co., LLC Fishing Resort.

‘Casserole Carnival’ to help guild raise funds

Community members are invited to come in from the cold for the “Casserole Carnival,” a February Bunco Party hosted by the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s hospital, from noon-3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave.

The fun-filled afternoon of playing Bunco includes prizes and a special “winter warm-up” menu with a choice of four casseroles, plus salads and desserts, all home-made by Guild members. The event includes bidding on 12 unique items in a silent auction. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Cost is $15 at the door, and all proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital for uncompensated care and research.

Learn how to manage stress at presentation

The Lodge at Sherwood Village hosts guest speaker Dr. Dennis Blair who offers “Stress: Recognize it, Learn Strategies to Manage it” at 2 p.m. on Monday Feb. 26, at The Lodge at Sherwood Village, located at 660 W. Evergreen Farm Way.

As part of the American Heart Month awareness campaign, Blair will guide attendees in identifying signs of stress, understanding its physical and mental impacts, and equipping them with effective tools for stress management.

The Lodge at Sherwood Village offers this and other presentations as part of its free monthly L.O.D.G.E. Lectures. These lectures, falling under the theme “Life’s Opportunities Developed thru Growth & Enrichment,” are designed to empower individuals in various aspects of life, Lodge representatives say.

“Our L.O.D.G.E. Lectures aim to enhance the well-being of our community members by addressing relevant topics,” said Michelle Headrick, administrator of The Lodge at Sherwood Village. “We believe that understanding and managing stress is crucial for overall health, especially during American Heart Month.”

Local office open to help disabled veterans

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) office in the Worksource building, 810 W. Brackett Road, is open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. every Wednesday to serve veterans who are needing help with claims or other information.

Services are free and veterans do not have to be members of DAV to receive assistance. The office is by walk-in; no appointment is necessary.

Women’s Fellowship registration open

Registration is open for the seventh-annual Olympic Peninsula Women’s Fellowship’s Inspirational Weekend, set for Friday-Saturday, March 8-9, at Dungeness Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, Sequim. Author and speaker Amy Carroll will lead sessions under the theme “Tender Hearts, Strong Voices.”

She’ll speak about the lives of Abigail, Esther, and Huldah to encourage participants to discern how and where God wants us to speak up for him, organizers write.

“Amy’s gift is teaching scripture in all its unvarnished glory, while sharing God’s big truths in small, understandable bites,” organizers write.

They said Carroll has shared on stages, podcasts, television shows and radio programs in her career.
