Fire crews quell motorhome fire at Canyon Creek

Firefighters with Clallam County Fire District 3 extinguished a fire that destroyed a motorhome off Slab Camp Road last week.

At about 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday June 6, the district’s Carlsborg Station was dispatched to reports of smoke in the Slab Camp area off Lost Mountain. While en route, the call was upgraded to a brush fire and a possible vehicle fire.

Fire crews found the fire on Forest Service Road 2870 at Canyon Creek, where a motorhome — and several large trees that had fallen on its top — were on fire.

The fire extended uphill into salal and other trees; no witnesses were on scene to collect information from, district officials said.

Crews used about 1,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. The district responded with two structural engines, two brush engines, one tender and one command vehicle.

After containment, National Forest Service (NFS) crews arrived on scene and took control of the incident. NFS staff noted that the motorhome was abandoned and had been at the location for months.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
