Hotel grant helps veteran family support home

A $5,000 grant through Choice Hotels International and the efforts of a Sequim hotel manager will help family members visit the Captain Joseph House in Port Angeles for some respite.

General Manager Yolanda Pompa of the Quality Inn and Suites applied for the “Your Community, Your Choice” competitive grant offered through the hotel’s parent franchise and was one of 10 hotels to be selected.

“It resonated in my heart because I had two uncles in the military who are gone now,” she said. “It means a lot to me to give back where it’s needed.”

Foundation executive director Betsy Reed Schultz thanked Pompa, hotel owner Bret Wirta and assistant general manager Kaittlyn Reese for believing in the foundation’s vision.

Schultz said they held an open house on March 20-21 as work continues to prepare the house at 1108 S. Oak St., Port Angeles, for hosting families..

The facility would offer respite and retreat for military families who have lost a loved one while in the service of the U.S. Armed Forces or died as a direct result of injuries sustained during this same combat service after Sept. 11, 2001.

It was created in memory of Captain Joseph William Schultz, a U.S. Army Green Beret detachment commander, who died in an IED attack in Afghanistan in 2011.
