Library to close for renovations/expansion March 10

The Sequim Library, 609 W. Washington St., closes March 10 for three weeks as materials and equipment are moved to 609 W. Washington St. in the former Brian’s Sporting Goods.

It’ll reopen Monday, April 1, with regular services in the temporary space as renovation and expansion begins in the current library. (Read more about the move this week’s “Off The Shelf” column.)

Sealed bids for the construction contract were accepted through 2 p.m. March 6. Library officials estimate construction costs at about $6.143 million to add about 3,800 gross-square-feet to the existing 6,255-square-feet building.

The building renovation is estimated to finish in spring 2025.

A last-day celebration in the current library is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 9, with the library open 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Staff and professional movers who specialize in relocating library materials will soon be packing up about 50,000 items.

Library leaders said materials checked out in Sequim before the closure have extended due dates, and the Bookmobile will visit the temporary space during the temporary closure 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m.-noon Thursdays.

The temporary location opens at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 1, and will offer browsing, checkouts, public computers, printing, newspapers, magazines, Wi-Fi, seating and programs for all ages. Walk-up book drops will be available beginning that day.

“Thanks to lots of hard work and generous support from donors and grants, this project is finally happening for Sequim residents,” NOLS Executive Director Noah Glaude said in a press release.

“The need for more space and improved infrastructure was identified decades ago. We overcame many challenges to get to this point, and I’m so happy that we’re building a space to support community gatherings, future readers and lifelong learners.”
