It didn’t take long for Cesar Gervacio to make an impression on Peninsula College soccer fans — or the record book.

The freshman from San Jose, Calif., scored all five goals in the No. 1-ranked Pirates’ rout of Shoreline on Sept. 28, tying a school single-game scoring record.

Gervacio netted one in the first half, capitalizing when Miguel Valderrama flicked a shot across the goal that Gervacio cleaned up.

It stayed 1-0 until five minutes into the second half, when Marlon Nava split the defense with a long pass to Kevin Medina, who set up Gervacio for his second score, netting the ball in the upper right corner.

At 66 minutes, Joey Hollimon beat a Shoreline defender off the dribble and squared up a pass to Gervacio for a relatively easy finish.

Gervacio got No. 4 at the 75-minute mark when Juan Carrillo launched a crossing shot from the corner that his freshman teammate headed in past Dolphin keeper Steven Moseley.

The finishing touch came with about eight minutes remaining, as Henry Barnabe found Gervacio who cut inside the penalty box and ripped a left-footed shot for his fifth goal.

Gervacio tied the mark Alex Martinez set with five scores in a 9-0 win over Pierce College on Sept. 21, 2013.

Martinez went on to score 28 that year to add to his 21 in 2012 for career 49 scored — tied with Miguel Gonzalez (2010-2011) for most in school history.

Gervacio now has six goals on the season.

Peninsula out-shot Shoreline 17-3, seeing three of their shots hit the crossbar.

PC keeper Brannon Dwyer recorded his third straight shutout.

Topping the Trojans

Peninsula capped the week with a 6-1 win against Everett, running their win streak to eight games.

Gervacio added two goals to run his total to eight scores, tied for third in the conference. Carillo added an assist and is now tied for the NWAC lead with five.

Everett jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Zachary Troupe netted a score, but the Pirates responded with a Carillo score at 23 minutes. Carillo then set up Jose Soto for a 2-1 PC lead at 41 minutes. Hollimon and Gervacio (two) added second half scores.

Looking ahead

The Pirates are home for two more matches — Oct. 5 vs. Skagit Valley and Oct. 8 vs. Whatcom — before heading back out on the road. Peninsula is at Edmonds on Oct. 12, and after an Oct. 15 home date with Shoreline, PC is at Everett on Oct. 19, Skagit Valley on Oct. 22 and Whatcom on Oct. 26.

Peninsula finishes the regular season Oct. 29 at home against Edmonds.

The NWAC tournament begins Nov. 2 with pigtail games, followed by quarterfinal games Nov. 5. The Final Four is set for Nov. 11-13 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
