An 18-month contract with general surgeon Dr. James Flowers will be reviewed by Olympic Medical Center’s board of directors at its Sept. 17 meeting.

The contract, which could be Flowers’ last because he is approaching retirement, would be one of 42 the hospital district has with the 83 active doctors in the district’s 764-square-mile service area that includes Sequim and Port Angeles but not Forks.

Chief medical officer Scott Kennedy said Flowers’ contract that would start Oct. 1 is a new one that doesn’t include a guaranteed base income, profit-sharing or paid time off.

Instead it is productivity-based, which means both the doctor and the hospital will share the risk, he said.

The doctor and the hospital are sharing the risk with this contract because if Flowers couldn’t work for three months, for whatever reason, he wouldn’t be generating revenue for the hospital and thus wouldn’t get paid, Kennedy said.

If Flowers did take time off, he would arrange with other surgeons to cover his practice during any absence, Kennedy said.
