Overnight Hood Canal Bridge closures scheduled

The state Department of Transportation has announced a series of overnight closures of the Hood Canal bridge on state Highway 104 beginning May 13.

The seven-hour closures will allow work crews to complete the center lock rehabilitation project that was started last summer.

The bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from 10 p.m.-5 a.m. weeknights from May 13-June 10 except for Friday, May 24, and Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day weekend traffic.

Due to the nature of the work, the bridge will not open for any traffic, including emergency vehicles.

During the overnight closures, construction crews will replace worn shock absorbers on the bridge.

The shock absorbers are an essential feature of the bridge that help keep both halves of the span connected.

The overnight work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled.

Brief daytime closures, 30-40 minutes in length, are also planned between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, May 6; Tuesday, May 7; Friday, May 24; Tuesday, May 28; Wednesday, May 29; and Friday, June 14.

Crews will work during these days to replace the center locks that hold the bridge together.

The lock replacement will be performed with the bridge open to traffic, but each replacement will require a 30- to 40-minute test opening.
