Play with a Purpose playgroup to meet Feb. 5

Clallam County Parent to Parent, and Clallam Mosaic, will be hosting their first monthly developmental playgroup, Play with a Purpose, on Saturday, Feb. 5.

This free playgroup for children ages 0-5, will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Sequim Boys and Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St. Siblings are welcome to attend. COVID-19 protocols will be observed; masks will be available.

Developmental playgroups are designed to help parents and their children who are demonstrating developmental delays or disabilities to work together to meet the child’s cognitive, social and developmental goals, organizers say. Families are invited to drop in, play and grow together.

The playgroup sessions will address several topics: gross and fine motor development; expressive and receptive language communication; social and emotional skills; adaptive and self-care skills, and feeding issues.

This parent participation group will be facilitated by Catherine McKinney, Clallam County Parent to Parent (P2P) coordinator, and will be led by Laura Hogan-Reyes.

Recently joining the Clallam Mosaic team as family support, Hogan-Reyes brings more than 38 years of pediatric experience in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, schools and home-based treatment.

For 14 years, Hogan-Reyes was the co-owner and director of the Center for Developing Kids in Pasadena, Calif., a private clinic offering occupational, physical and speech therapy services to children from birth through the teen years. She served as a consultant with Club 21, an organization providing services to families and children with Down Syndrome and has lectured on various topics including maximizing hand function, oral motor and feeding issues, and sensory strategies for the classroom and home.

Hogan-Reyes has recently relocated to Sequim, and said she is looking forward to collaborating with families, children, and those that serve the special needs community.
