Public invited to rally against GMOs, Monsanto

Citizens from across the North Olympic Peninsula are invited to join the local GMO Awareness Group and thousands of individuals and groups worldwide to protest Monsanto’s role in and manipulation of the food supply. The rally begins at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at the corner triangle of East Front Street and First Avenue in Port Angeles.

GMOs — genetically modified organisms — are engineered, splicing genes from different organisms into crops so they can withstand high doses of herbicides and pesticides.

U.S. consumers currently do not know if their food contains any GMO ingredients or has been produced using GMO processes. Washington voters will have the chance to be the first state in the nation to pass a GMO labeling law: Voter Initiative I-522 will be on the Nov. 5 ballot.
