A mountain lion injured a 4-year-old child near the Victoria Overlook area at Hurricane Ridge.
Olympic National Park rangers were notified of the attack about 3:15 p.m. Sunday, July 20, according to a press release.
Initial reports said a collared mountain lion bit a child who was walking with their family on a popular trail.
The mountain lion was located and dispatched on Monday. There are no current threats to the public, National Park representatives said.
Paramedics from Clallam County Fire District 2 and park staff responded and transferred the child by LifeFlight to a Level 1 Trauma Center. The child underwent treatment for their injuries in a Seattle hospital.
The national park did not identify the child.
Rangers began searching for the cougar immediately following the incident. A canine team joined the search at about 5 p.m. that day. Rangers located the cougar shortly after the canine team joined the effort but did not complete the dispatch operation until Monday morning, July 21.
The incident is under investigation, the national park said. Witnesses should call 888-653-0009 or email nps_isb@nps.gov.
