River Center to screen award-winning ‘Rights of Nature’ film

Q&A session with director to follow

The Dungeness River Nature Center will host a screening of the award-winning film “Invisible Hand: Rights of Nature,” featuring a question-and-answer session with the director. The documentary is about the creation of “rights of nature” — a battle where nature, democracy and capitalism face off in rural America.

The screening will take place on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. in Rainshadow Hall at the Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 W. Hendrickson Rd. in Sequim. The virtual Q&A with the film’s director will take place after the screening at 3:30 p.m.

In the documentary, people in Toledo, Ohio, vote to grant Lake Erie the right to exist while others in Grant Township, Pennsylvania, protect groundwater from industrial waste. They, along with Defend Oh:yo’ and Standing Rock, are joined in an international fight to protect more than just water. They fight for their community, democracy, and for nature as a living entity unto itself.

Produced in part by award-winning actor Mark Ruffalo, this film won Best Documentary Feature from the Hollywood Verge Film Awards, Spotlight Documentary Film Awards’ Gold Award, 2021 Common Good International Film Festival Audience Award, and Accolade Global Film Competition Award of Excellence for Documentary.

Tickets are $10 for Dungeness River Nature Center members and $12 for non-members. Space is limited and advance registration is recommended.
