Berg, teacher, earns national certification
Brian Berg, Sequim High School mathematics teacher, recently became the ninth Sequim teacher since 2000 to earn national board certification status by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
According to a recent report by the National Research Council of the National Academies, students taught by national board certified teachers make higher gains on achievement tests than those taught by teachers who have not applied or did not achieve certification.
Berg is one of 70,000 national board certified teachers in the U.S.
National board certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward accomplished teachers, going beyond state licensing requirements. As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, video recordings and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching.

Band boosters host car wash
Sequim High Band Boosters is sponsoring a car wash from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Tarcisio’s Italian Place restaurant parking lot, 609 W. Washington St. Donations are accepted.
Band members also are selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts for $8 per dozen at the car wash.
The group is continuing fundraising efforts for expenses during the 2008-2009 band season, including a trip to the Heritage Festival competition in Anaheim, Calif. Students and parents wishing to participate are encouraged to sign up in the band room or to contact Colleen Robinson at 683-6936.
Five Acre School begins ‘Bare Necessities’ drive
Five Acre School is supporting the North Olympic Foster Care Association by holding the "Bare Necessities" drive. Now until Friday, Dec. 5, the community can donate warm winter essentials for children in foster care. Drop-off locations are the Dungeness Kids Company in Sequim next to the QFC and Five Acre School at 515 Lotzgesell Road in Sequim. Port Angeles drop-off location is Curtis Interiors on First Street. ‘Sister City’ reunion set
Current and former Sequim student ambassadors and chaperones to Shiso City, Japan, and their families are invited to a potluck and reunion at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church parish hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave.
Participants are asked to bring one of the following: Last names A through M – main dish casserole; last names M through S – salads and bread. Last names T through Z – desserts and beverages. Dinner is from 5-5:45 p.m.; story sharing, from 6-6:45 p.m.; questions about the trip from interested students, 6:45-7 p.m.
Participants are also asked to bring pictures, scrapbooks and special mementos for show and tell.

Santa’s breakfast
set for Dec. 13
The 17th-annual Breakfast With Santa is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
Breakfast includes waffles, scrambled eggs, ham, juice and coffee. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children.
Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by fire truck at 8:30 a.m. and are available for pictures.
All proceeds go to the Citizens for Sequim Schools.
