Sequim Soroptimists award scholarships

Soroptimist International of Sequim announces the awarding of three, $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarships. These scholarships are funded exclusively from monies raised by the Sequim club, primarily at the Annual Gala Garden Show the third weekend of March. This year’s recipients are:

 

• Halli Forsman, a 2011 graduate of Peninsula College, is majoring in physics at Central Washington University, with minors in astronomy and mathematics. She has been accepted for an astronomy research position at the University of Washington’s Manastash Ridge Observatory and she co-authored a presentation to the American Astronomical Society.

She eventually wants to earn a doctorate in physics and have a career in astronomy research.

Forsman belongs to two clubs at Central, Society of Physics Students and Astronomy Club, that focus on outreach. She participates and hosts various educational events throughout the school year, teaching the public about physics and astronomy.

 

• Erin Henninger, a 2013 graduate of Peninsula College, will be continuing this fall at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. She will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, followed by a graduate degree in speech language pathology. her ultimate goal is to work with children as a speech language pathologist, either in a medical office or school setting.

 

Henninger has been an active member of the Sequim community by volunteering at the Sequim Food Bank, coaching youth soccer and participating in community musical groups.

 

• Lisa Law, a former Peninsula College graduate, is attending Olympic College in Bremerton and is enrolled in the Bachelors of Nursing program. She expects to graduate in June 2015. After graduation, Law plans to work in the home health field with the elderly or disabled. She is a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician with Clallam County.

 

Law volunteers at Sequim High School with the band, in local Boy and Girl Scouts organizations as a troop leader and with Sequim Prairie Grange at many community events.
