Baseball: Wolves battling to keep pace among league leaders

Only a bit of darkness could keep the Wolves from a spotless week.

Heading into some tough Olympic League competition, Sequim’s baseball crew got a pair of wins and a rare nine-inning tie against North Mason, Port Townsend and Vashon last week.

The Wolves are now in the middle of a pack of four teams jockeying for position behind league leader, the North Kitsap Vikings. They are scheduled to play at North Kitsap on April 18 and host Bremerton on April 19.

The Wolves host Olympic on April 26 before closing the regular season with three away games: April 27 at Port Angeles, April 29 at Kingston and May 3 at North Mason.

Daylight quells non-leaguer

A sloppy, back-and-forth game on April 15 between Sequim and 1A visitor Vashon ended in the ninth inning, when the game proved too dark to finish.

Justin Porter and Gavin Velarde had two hits and two runs each, and teammate Logan Hankinson drove in a pair of runs in an 8-8 draw with Vashon Island.

Daniel Harker started for Sequim, going three innings and giving up one earned run. With the game knotted at 3-3, Vashon plated three runs in the top of the fifth, only to have Sequim respond with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning.

The Pirates once again took the lead in the sixth, going up 8-6, but the Wolves responded with two runs of their own — an Evan Hurn sacrifice fly and RBI double by Harker.

Neither team could plate a run in the seventh or eighth innings, and after Vashon’s half of the ninth, coaches called it a game.

SHS rips Redhawks

Before the game hit the third inning, this one was over.

Sequim surrendered a first inning run, then ran away with a 12-1 non-league home win against Port Townsend on April 14.

Hurn was 2-for-4 with a home run, Johnnie Young drove in three runs and Austin Hilliard had a triple and two RBIs in the rout.

Nick Faunce picked up his second win of the season, striking out five and giving up four hits and no walks in three innings.

Hankinson and Velarde cleaned up, combining for two scoreless, one-hit innings.

Sequim bears down on North Mason’s Bulldogs

Two outs — so what?

Sequim scored five of its six runs with two away in a 6-3 home victory against North Mason’s Bulldogs on April 12. James Thayer had a two-run single and James Grubb had an RBI double and RBI sacrifice fly in the win. Grubb picked up the win on the mound; in five innings, he gave up two runs on four hits and struck out 11 Bulldogs.

Thayer struck out all three North Mason batters in the sixth and Hilliard surrendered a run in the seventh. Porter swiped three bases and Velarde had two hits and three steals.

Baseball falls to NK

Olympic League-leading North Kitsap strengthened its hold on the division’s top spot with a 7-0 win against visiting Sequim on April 18.

The Vikings took advantage of Wolves miscues in a six-run fourth inning that broke open the game. That was more than enough for Viking starter Ryan Hecker, who tossed five innings of one-hit, eight-strikeout ball.

James Grubb was tagged with the loss for Sequim, charged with seven runs — just one earned. Gavin Velarde (double, singles) had both of Sequim’s hits.
