Baseball: Wolves edge Trojans, finish regular season with 11 wins

Coming off back-to-back, two-win seasons, Sequim High’s baseball squad finished the regular season on a strong note.

The Wolves got a clutch double and run from Lincoln Bear in a 4-3 win at Olympic on May 4, as Sequim (5-9 in Olympic League, 11-9 overall) finished the regular campaign above .500 — after starting the season 3-7.

Sequim was a combined 4-29 in 2021 and 2022.

Seeded No. 12 in the West Central District tournament, the Wolves were scheduled to host 13th-seeded Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, May 9 in a loser-out, winner advances game. Results were not available at press time.

The district tournament has more games scheduled for May 10 and May 13. Six teams from the 16-team tourney advance to the class 2A state tournament.

With a win, Sequim would take on the losing team in the May 9, fourth/fifth seed match-up — White River or rival Port Angeles — on May 10, needing to win that and a May 13 game to advance to state.

Against Olympic, Bear doubled to reach base and scored the eventual winning run for the Wolves in the sixth inning.

After giving up three runs early, Sequim starter Ethan Staples and reliever Zeke Schmadeke shut down the Trojans.

Staples and Bear each had an RBI, Hunter Tennell was 1-for-3 with and RBI, and Devyn Dearinger and Ricky Jennings each had singles in the win.

Schmadeke tossed four innings of shutout relief, giving up four hits and two walks.

On May 2, Sequim and East Jefferson for the second time this season got themselves into a wild, high-scoring affair, with the Wolves coming out on top 16-14.

The game featured a total of 25 hits. In two games this season, the Wolves and Rivals combined for 64 runs.

East Jefferson was able to get up on Sequim 10-5, but the Wolves rallied with an eight-run fifth inning to take the lead. Dearinger pitched the final two innings, allowing just one East Jefferson hit and striking out two to finally quiet the Rivals’ bats.

Dearinger was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Bear was 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBIs. Schmadeke was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI.

Tennell had a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Jennings was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks. Ayden Holland was 1-for-1 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.

Sequim dropped a 6-0 decision at Olympic on May 1, managing just four hits against a pair of Olympic pitchers. Sequim got good pitching performances from Toppy Robideau, Lincoln Bear and Bryant Laboy, who gave up just six hits and three walks. Holland had a double for Sequim, while Dearinger, Jennings and Tennell had singles.
