A wild five days for Sequim’s boys and girls golfers ended nearly perfectly at the Duke Streeter Invite in Port Angeles on Friday, with
Sequim’s girls taking first place and the Wolves’ boys finishing in second by a single stroke.
Earlier in the week, Sequim’s boys topped a strong field for the title at the Port Ludlow Invite.
Both Sequim teams posted big scores in beating league foe North Mason on April 29.
Additionally, Sequim senior Zoei Zbaraschuk has signed to play at Division II Sonoma State University in California next fall with a golfing scholarship.
The boys’ week started strong at the Port Ludlow Invitational, where eight, five-player teams played a Stableford points match in 20 mph winds on a hilly course.
Steve Loerlein led the squad with a round of 80 for 28 Stableford points, followed closely by Ryan O’Mera (84, 24 points), Casey Torres (89, 19), Mallory Maloney (90, 18) and Jake Dethlefsen (94, 14).
Sequim’s 103 team points outpaced runner-up Steilacoom at 96 points. Olympic was third with 90 points and Chimacum, boasting medalist Eric Nelson (72, 36 points) was fourth. Port Angeles was fifth.

“Our boys did a great job considering the weather and the wet Port Ludlow course,” said Sequim coach Vic Quinet.
Three days later, Sequim knocked off North Mason 89-41, led once again by Loerlein. The senior shot a 79 for 28 Stableford points.
“(Steve) has really been coming along,” Quinet said. “He’s found consistency (and is) a great candidate for most improved player.”
O’Mera ably backed his teammate with a round of 82 for 25 points.
Sequim’s boys capped the week with a second-place finish at Duke Streeter, finishing one shot behind tourney champ Shelton and one shot ahead of Kingston.
O’Mera and Dethlefsen combined for a round of 71 while Loerlein matched their score. Maloney and Ezra Perkins shot a combined 79.
Port Townsend’s Sean Anderson and Cody Piper won the two-man title with a round of 67.
Girls breeze to win
Sequim’s girls had a slightly easier time, edging out Port Angeles by four shots to claim the invitational title. Kingston was third.
Sequim’s Kim Duce and Hailey Estes shot a 76 while Zbaraschuk and Ashley Morton combined to shoot a 77.
Tracie Dupuis and Emily Cook of Port Angeles took home the two-player title with a round of 72.
Sequim joined Port Angeles and Olympic in a match at The Cedars at Dungeness on April 27 that, for league standing purposes, counted as a match only between P.A. and Olympic.
Sequim outshot both teams, however, scoring 125 Stableford points to Port Angeles’ 114 and Olympic’s 90.
Zbaraschuk had the top round of the day with a one-over 38 for 35 points, followed by Duce (46), Estes (47), Lisa Doan (52) and Morton (57).
“The girls keep improving,” Sequim girls’ coach Garrett Smithson said. “It went really well – the best they’ve played since I’ve been here.”
Sequim topped North Mason easily on April 29, winning the league match 113-22 to stay undefeated at 6-0.
Zoei Zbaraschuk was medalist once again with a round of 43 for 29 Stableford points. Doan and Duce each shot nine-hole rounds of 47.
Upcoming rounds
Sequim’s squads take on Port Angeles on May 6 at home.
The Wolves’ top boys golfers, O’Mera and Loerlein, battle some of the best duffers in the state at the Bill Egbers tournament at Skagit Golf & Country Club in Burlington on May 7.
The Olympic League tourney is slated for May 11 at The Cedars at Dungeness; the boys start at 11 a.m. while the girls begin at about noon.
The top four golfers at league earn automatic bids to the class 2A state tournament. Other golfers have a shot to qualify for state on May 18 at the West Central District tournament at Eagle’s Pride Golf Course at Fort Lewis, near Tacoma.
The state tourney is slated for May 25-26 at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.
League leaders
Michael Noyes of Olympic leads the league with a 15.5 Stableford points average.
Sequim’s O’Mera is fourth with a 14-point average and Loerlein seventh with an 11.3 average.
On the girls’ side, Zbaraschuk leads the league with a 32.0 average. Port Angeles’ Emily Cook is a distant second with 26.3 points per match. Sequim’s Duce is seventh with 22.2 points, Doan is 10th with 19 points per match and Estes is 11th with an 18.8 point average.
