Boys basketball: Sequim routs Vashon, falls at Bainbridge

Sequim’s Wolves earned a split in their games last week against foes outside their classification, topping 1A Vashon at home a day after falling to 3A Bainbridge Spartans on the road.

Sequim got five 3-pointers from Solomon Sheppard and another five treys from Keenan Green, but it wasn’t enough to counteract Bainbridge’s hot shooting in an 87-66 loss on Dec. 9.

The Wolves were within two points (14-12) after one quarter but got out-scored 23-17 in the second.

“They blew it open at the end of the third,” Sequim coach Craig Brooks said. “We played like it was an early game.”

The Wolves stayed within range of Bainbridge most of the game but the Spartans were able to pull away with a 20-12 fourth quarter.

Green finished with 25 points and Sheppard with 20.

Bainbridge countered Green and Sheppard’s big games with three 20-point scorers of their own, led by San Nylund, who had 25.

Charlie Grider added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Wolves.

The Wolves cruised to the win despite shooting just 2-for-11 (18.2%) from 3-point range, thanks in large part to strong work on the glass: Jamison Gray paced the Sequim squad with 10 rebounds, four on the offensive end, while Grider had nine and Lars Wiker had seven.

Sheppard and Shamadeke had four steals apiece.

The Wolves also passed the ball well, racking up 21 assists on 35 made shots.
