Boys soccer: Wolves in thick of playoff chase

Following a deflected shot and stellar defense, Sequim’s boys soccer (6-4 in league, 9-5 overall) looks to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year this week in a close race.

The Wolves defeated the Olympic League’s No. 2 North Kitsap (7-3, 7-3-2) 1-0 on April 28 at home.

Liam Harris, who leads Sequim with 11 goals, scored the Wolves’ only goal at 25 minutes in with a ricochet after dribbling toward the left side of the goal and kicking it off the goalie and back to Harris and in the goal.

“It ping-ponged off him,” head coach Dave Brasher said.

“He’s been playing really well and he’s a vocal leader.”

But the player of the match was goalie Austin Wagner who Brasher said previously is having his best year.

“He kept us in it,” he said.

Wagner prevented multiple shots including a late surge by the Vikings in the second half.

Brasher said the difference this time with the Vikings was that they didn’t allow them momentum because they scored two quick goals before half in a 2-1 on March 31.

Earlier in the week, Sequim won 4-0 over winless North Mason (0-10. 2-12) on April 26. Konnor Parrish, Thomas Winfield, Harris and Jared Fodge scored the Wolves’ goals.

Winfield sat out the North Kitsap game after an injury sidelined him at practice the day before, but Brasher expects him back.

To finish the season, Sequim hosted Bremerton (6-5, 7-7-1) on Tuesday, who sits in fifth place in league and the top four advancing to the playoffs. The Knights defeated North Kitsap 2-0 on April 30.

The Wolves finish the regular season at Olympic (2-8, 2-11) on Thursday, May 5. Playoffs begin May 10.
