In their final tuneup for the West Central District meet on Feb. 3, diver Matthew Craig and the Wolves’ 200 free relay squad punched their ticket to districts.

Craig, a freshman, placed fourth overall in earning his district berth while SHS’s relay team of Eric Prosser, Charlie Prosser, Christian Goodrich and Chase Ridgway placed third and swam a district-qualifying time at the Olympic League divisional meet in Port Angeles last week.

Sequim saw each member of its 200 relay team set personal bests to further their postseason chances. Goodrich, Ridgway and Charlie Prosser each swam a second faster on their legs while Eric Prosser set a season best with a 23.55-second leg. Overall, the team improved its personal best by more than five seconds.

“They were close before, but today, they put the pedal to the metal,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said. “We are all very excited.”

Sequim’s 200-yard medley relay (Eric and Charlie Prosser, Ridgway and Wendall Lorenzen) trimmed three seconds off their previous best relay time, but missed qualifying for districts by 3 seconds.

Adrian Gonzalez, an exchange student from Spain who hadn’t trained or competed in diving before this season, completed in nine dives and placed seventh overall.

In the 100 free event, Goodrich and Charlie Prosser dropped about two seconds off their previous bests while Gonzalez cut 7.5 seconds off his previous best.

Charlie Prosser also improved his 100 backstroke time by more than a second.

“I think he will be one to watch for next year,” Moats said.

The Wolves move on to the West Central District meet, set for Feb. 13-14 at Hazen High School in Renton.

Qualifying times, top finishers and a limited number of “wild card” berths help athletes at district move on to the class 2A state meet, set for Feb. 20-21 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
