Football: Sequim backs run past Coupeville

Sequim’s Wolves are 2-0 for the first time since 2011 after knocking off class 1A Coupeville 40-18 on the road on Sept. 12.

Sequim’s Wolves are 2-0 for the first time since 2011 after knocking off class 1A Coupeville 40-18 on the road on Sept. 12.

The Wolves ran roughshod for 274 yards on 39 carries — about seven yards per try — as Sequim took a 27-3 lead by halftime.

Coupeville regrouped and closed the gap to 34-18 and recovered an onside kick, but a stout Sequim defense forced a turnover on downs and Gavin Velarde ended any suspense with a 59-yard touchdown run with 2:28 remaining.

Ethan Richmond led Sequim with 87 yards on just four carries while fullback Mark Feeney added two touchdown carries. SHS quarterback Miguel Moroles finished 9-of-11 for 162 yards, 110 of those to Ian Dennis.

The win gives Sequim a pair of non-league victories heading into their key Sept. 19 home matchup with Kingston (0-2). The Buccaneers fell 47-7 to perennial powerhouse Archbishop Murphy on Friday.

Early advantages

Coupeville, playing in front of their faithful at Mickey Clark Field, took a lead early in Friday’s game as Joel Walstad knocked home a 27-yard field goal. Sequim responded with a pair of scoring drives capped by Feeney’s short scores.

Moroles put Sequim ahead 21-3 after finding Bailey Earley from 11 yards out.

Coupeville senior quarterback Joel Walstad led the home Wolves down the field just before halftime, but Whitaker snagged an errant pass and raced 85 yards to paydirt with eight seconds left on the first half clock, putting Sequim up 27-3.

Moroles opened the second half scoring, racing in from five yards out. But Coupeville wasn’t done, as Walstad tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Josh Bayne in the third quarter and booted the extra point. Early in the fourth quarter, Coupeville’s Lathom Kelley rushed in from the six-yard line and Walstad

threw to C.J. Smith for the two-point conversion, trimming the gap to two scores. Coupeville had a chance to make it a one-score game but had a receiver drop a pass in the end zone and eventually the home team turned the ball over, setting up Velarde’s big run.

With Sequim bottling up Coupeville’s running game — the home Wolves ran for just 77 yards on 24 carries — Walstad aired it out to the tune of 21-of-45 for 272 yards.
