Girls basketball: Neah Bay tops Sequim in non-league game

A poor night shooting from the field spelled doom for Sequim High’s girls basketball squad in a non-league match-up with reigning 1B state champ Neah Bay, falling 67-29.

The Red Devils (5-1), fresh off a 33-point win over Port Angeles the night before, held Sequim to just 11-of-59 shooting (19%) from the field and 1-of-21 (5%) from 3-point range.

“We couldn’t buy a basket tonight (and) Neah Bay played well,” Sequim coach Joclin Julmist said.

Bobbi Mixon had a solid game for the Wolves, scoring 10 points and nabbing two steals.

“She was steady … (and) played with confidence,” Julmist said.

Starting guard Gracie Chartraw, who played with Neah Bay as an eighth-grader last season, was 2-for-29 from the field and finished with seven points. Julmist said that while she struggled to score, she was very aggressive and “left it all out on the court tonight.”

Dani Herman had 10 rebounds and three blocks, and Libby Turella chipped in five points and six rebounds in limited playing time.

The Red Devils held Jolene Vaara, Sequim’s top scorer from 2022-23, to just five points and three rebounds.

“We have to flush this game and get back to work,” Julmist said.
