Girls basketball: Spartans spoil SHS’s run at league title

Looking to avenge the three-point season-opening loss at Bainbridge, Sequim ran into a buzz-saw on Saturday.

The Wolves girls basketball team struggled from the floor and lost to Olympic League-leading Bainbridge 47-31 on Saturday.

Sequim shot just 23.3 percent (10-for-43) from the floor as Bainbridge got up by as much as 39-20 at one point, in a game postponed twice because of stormy winter weather.

“They jumped out on us early and never looked back,” Sequim coach Joclin Julmist said.

The Wolves were led by Gracie Chartraw with 15 points, four assists and three steals. Jolene Vaara had seven points and four rebounds, but the former league MVP fouled out.

The physical game saw Julmist ejected after picking up technical fouls.

Sequim now sits in third place in the Olympic League at 6-3 (8-4 overall) and will need plenty of help in their bid to repeat as league champs. Bainbridge leads the way at 8-1, with Port Angeles second (7-1), followed by Sequim and Kingston (5-3).

SHS gets season sweep of Knights

A month after knocking off Bremerton by nearly 30 points on the road, Sequim repeated the effort at home, earning a season sweep of their Olympic League foes with a 70-41 win on Jan. 19.

“The girls did a great job moving the ball tonight,” Julmist said.

Sequim up 21-12 after one quarter and, thanks to a Libby Turella 3-pointer at the buzzer, a 44-26 lead by halftime.

Bobbi Mixon had a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter as Sequim pulled away, gaining a 25-point lead with 3:46 left in the quarter.

The Wolves’ defense kept at it, holding Bremerton to three points in the final frame.

“We were able to get almost everyone in the game tonight and that is always fun for the girls because they show up every day at practice, helping us get better,” Julmist said.

Turella filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, five steals, three rebounds and three assists.

“She was all over the place she had a great game; she is the glue to our team right now,” Julmist said.

Mixon added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Vaara had a solid all-around game with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

“She did a good job getting the ball to open players,” Julmist said of Vaara.
