There’s still a lot for the Lady Wolves soccer team to play for in a tough season, says head coach Victor Lancheros, each other.

With one game last week, Sequim (1-9 in league, 4-10 overall) put up another valiant effort against top-seeded North Kitsap (10-0, 11-1-1) on Oct. 21. The Wolves held the Vikings scoreless until early in the second half when Briann George scored 50 minutes in with an assist by Bailey Dabney and Mary-Cate Moriarty scored five minutes later with an assist by George.

Lancheros said it was one of the best games the Wolves played all year.

“We held them down as long as we could,” he said. “The kids played hard. I thought were going to make it all the way to the end (scoreless).”

Last time Sequim and North Kitsap faced off, the Wolves lost 3-0 at home on Oct. 2. Sequim has been shutout five times this season with two of those against the Vikings. Win or lose, five of the Wolves’ games this season so far were decided by one goal and three by two goals.

In the girls’ latest effort, Lancheros said coaches were happy with how they played.

“Some games could have gone either way,” he said. “But we always seemed to be missing a key player. Luck just wasn’t with us.”

Lancheros said he commends team captains Maeve Harris, Shelby Lott and Lisa Radford for “doing an awesome job and keeping the team positive” through a tough season.

“They didn’t lose hope even after knowing they weren’t going to make the playoffs,” he said. “They played like a family, which is something to admire. I’m proud of all of them.”

The Wolves finished their season with two games coming after press time on Monday and Tuesday, Oct.27-28 at Bremerton (3-8, 5-10) and Olympic (9-1, 11-2-1).
