After a postponement in the schedule, the combined Sequin-Port Angeles-Crescent prep gymnastics squad picked up two league meets in the span of three days, earning a split.

Leading the way at both meets was Sequim High senior Alex Schmadeke, the Augustana University (South Dakota)-bound gymnast who earned top honors in all-around scoring at both meets.

On Jan. 19 at home, the visiting Bainbridge Spartans edged the peninsula team 154.44-147.7, despite Schmadeke placing first in thee of four events. She was first on the vault (8.2 points), beam (9.4) and floor exercise (9.45), and was third on the bars (7.45), finishing with 34.5 points.

Teammate Jessamyn Schindler, a Port Angeles freshman, was fifth in all around scoring (31.65 points), followed by Mei-Ying Harper-Smith of Port Angeles in sixth (27.90) and Sequim’s Ellie Turner in seventh (26.65). Crescent’s Aubrie Scott was ninth (25.50).

Two days later, Schmadeke earned 33.30 points to lead the team to a 149.85-78.35 win over host Kingston.

Schmadeke was first on the bars (7.85) and beam (9.0) and second on the vault (8.3) behind teammate Susannah Sharp (8.4).

Schindler was second in all-around scoring (32.25), followed by Sharp (29.95), Harper-Smith (27.8), Turner (23.6) and Scott (23.45).

The combined prep gymnastics squad completes the regular season on Jan. 26 with a home meet against North Kitsap.

Top local athletes compete at the 2A/3A Olympic League and South Sound Conference sub-district in Puyallup on Feb. 10. Competing schools include Bainbridge, Capital, North Kitsap, Kingston, Port Angeles, River Ridge, Sequim and Timberline.
