Men’s soccer: Pirates remain perfect, top Trojans and Cardinals

Peninsula's Pirates got a bit of a wakeup call against a spirited Skagit Valley squad Saturday evening.

Peninsula’s Pirates got a bit of a wakeup call against a spirited Skagit Valley squad Saturday evening.

Unfortunately for the host Cardinals, Peninsula (5-0 in conference, 7-0 overall) woke up.

Caio Maciel, a sophomore midfielder from Salvador, Brazil, scored twice in a six-minute span as the Pirates erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to knock off Skagit Valley 3-1 on Sept. 20.

Both of Maciel’s second-half scores came off Eddie Benito assists. Micah Weller added an insurance score at the 80-minute mark off a Christopher Chertude feed.

Eswin Tinoco had a score for Skagit Valley at the 10-minute mark but P.C. keeper Aaron Zavolokin needed to make just one save the rest of the match.

That gave Peninsula a 2-0 mark for the week.

On Sept. 17, the Pirates fended off Everett 2-1 on the road, scoring twice in the first half. Maciel scored a penalty kick just three minutes in and 18 minutes later Kassio Atila hit the Everett crossbar on a set piece and Chertude headed the rebound home.

Everett took advantage of a second-half mistake as Jered Laurence knocked home a score, but Peninsula’s defense recouped for the win. In the second half, Everett took advantage of a defensive mistake.

Peninsula and Clark remain the only unbeaten teams in the NWAC. They meet in a non-conference match at Clark on Oct. 18.

In the meantime, the Pirates travel to face the North Division’s second-place Cardinals at Skagit Valley on Saturday night. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
