First it was a nearly perfect Storm, then it was trying to keep up with Running Vikes.

Either way, it was a tough end to a spectacular season for Peninsula College’s defending NWAACC champion Pirate men’s basketball season.

On Monday evening, the Chemeketa Storm used some hot shooting to knock off a tired Pirate squad coming off an overtime win from the day before, 98-91.

Tyler Funk paced Peninsula’s offense Monday with 25 points eight assists, seven steals and six rebounds. Sam Waller finished with 21 points and six rebounds, and Dudley Ewell had his best game of the tourney, chipping in with 17 points and nine rebounds.

DeShaun Freeman, the Peninsula big man who was last year’s tourney MVP and scored 37 points against Spokane, was slowed by a knee injury and had just eight points and nine rebounds.

Chemeketa held J.T. Terrell, P.C.’s top scorer, to 14 points, about 11 below his average.

Gavin Kauffman paced the Storm offense with five 3-pointers and 25 points overall.

On Tuesday, Big Bend used an advantage on the boards to come away with a 84-73 win for third place, dropping Peninsula to fourth overall.

Blake Skidmore led the Running Vikes with 30 points and 10 rebounds, as Big Bend jumped to a nine-point lead by halftime and held on.

Peninsula was outrebounded 44-25 and was certainly missing Freeman, one of the NWAACC’s leading rebounders, who missed the game with the injured knee.

Ewell and Terrell led the Pirates with 16 points apiece.

Waller hit for 12 points but struggled at times, going 4-for-15 from the field.

Nine Peninsula sophomores played their final game as Pirates. Freeman and Terrell were selected as North Region All-Stars and have been invited to play in the NWAACC Basketball Sophomore All-Star Showcase.

The game is scheduled for March 11 at Pierce College. The North Region All-Stars, including top players from Whatcom, Bellevue and other P.C. rivals, join together to take on top stars from the South Region.
