Sequim fastpitch’s bats powered up again last week.

The Lady Wolves defeated Klahowya 8-2 on March 25 and slammed their way past Bremerton 26-1 on March 27, both in Sequim.

Versus the Eagles, Sequim fell behind 2-0 at the top of the first inning, but went ahead with three of their own in the bottom of the first to go ahead.

Jordan Bentz and Kaylee Gumm led Sequim with two hits each, Bentz hitting a home run and recording three RBIs.

Olivia Kirsch threw six strikeouts in seven innings in 76 pitches.

Kirsch also led the hitting attack against the Knights last Friday going 4-4 with nine RBIs and Allysen Montelius hit 5-5 and recorded the win with only 47 pitches.

Sequim coach Mike McFarlen said he’ll continue using a platoon of pitchers with Kirsch, Montelius, Bentz and Chloie Sparks.

“I think it’s a good system for now,” he said. “It’s getting the girls some confidence. When the teams get tougher we’ll decide what to do.”

Last week’s wins follow up two losses to Anacortes and Sehome on March 21.

Since then, McFarlen said the girls all have stepped up their games a notch.

“The hustle is there,” he said. “They seem a bit more focused.”

This week, the Wolves (1-0 in league, 4-2 overall) traveled to North Kitsap on March 31 and host Olympic on April 2 during spring break before traveling to Black Hills on April 10.

Girls’ tennis: Sequim goes 1-2 in second week

The Lady Wolves (1-2 in league, 2-3 overall) lost two of three matches last week all at home.

They lost four matches to three against Bremerton on March 24, defeated Klahowya six matches to one on March 25 and lost to Kingston four to three on March 26. The team travels to Chimacum on April 13 and travels to its next four match-ups before hosting North Mason on April 21.

Golf: Sequim boys’ match vs. Cowboys cancelled

The Sequim boys golf match hosting Chimacum on March 24 at The Cedars at Dungeness was cancelled and will be rescheduled. The boys and girls teams travel to Port Townsend on April 8.

Track & Field: Silverdale sweep for Sequim tracksters

It’s not a home away from home, but Sequim’s track and field athletes seemed quite comfortable at Olympic’s Silverdale Stadium last week.

The Wolves got wins on both sides of the ledger on March 25, topping Olympic, Port Angeles and Chimacum in both boys’ and girls’ team standings. Sequim’s boys (104 points) topped the host Trojans (92) and Port Angeles (51), while Sequim’s girls (95) narrowly defeated the Roughriders (91.5) and Olympic (78.5).

Sequim’s girls got five first-place finishes and eight second-place finishes, led by Mattie Clark’s sweep in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles (18.21 and 56.30 seconds). Waverly Shreffler topped the field in the 400-meter race (1:01.79) and second in the 1600 (5:48), while Emily van Dyken won the pole vault (8-0).

Sequim’s 4×100 relay team of Telicia Busby, Molly Earley, Anna White and Mercedes Woods edged Port Angeles’ squad by 0.16 seconds for first place (55.11 seconds), while the Wolves’ 4×400 relay team (Busby, Woods, Gretchen Happe and Heidi Vereide) took top honors at 4:50.32.

Sequim runners-up include Vereide (200, 28.13; and long jump, 15-11), Woods (400, 1:08.65), Happe (800, 2:45.44), Katelyn Rogers (100 hurdles, 18.37), Molly Earley (300 hurdles, 57.17) and Sequim’s 4×200 relay team (Busby, Happe, Shreffler and Emma Beeson, 1:56.66).

On the boys’ side, Oscar Herrera was a double winner with first-place finishes in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles (16.23 and 41.87 seconds, respectively), and helped Sequim’s 4×400 relay team — along with Miguel Moroles, Jason Springer and Kane Stoddard — win their event by more than 18 seconds (3:39.84).

Sequim’s Josh Cibene pole vaulted to a win with a 13-foot effort, just three inches off his personal best. Alex Barry took top honors with a 163-foot, 5-inch javelin throw and Austin Adams won the shot put at 39 feet, 1 inch.

Sequim’s boys also racked up nine second-place finishes, including two from Jason Springer (400, 56.12; and long jump, 17-9.5) and distance runner Brendon Despain (1600, 4:39; and the 3200, 10:27). Other runners-up included C.J. Daniels (800, 2:10), Dylan Miller (300 hurdles, 50.43), Miguel Moroles (200, 24.48), Jackson Oliver (high jump, 5-10) and Kane Stoddard (100, 12.22).

Select Sequim athletes compete at the April 4 Lil’ Norway Invitational in Poulsbo and the April 11 Tacoma Invitational. Sequim returns to Olympic League action April 16 at Port Townsend to take on the host Redhawks, Klahowya and Coupeville.

Boys soccer: Wolves fall just short in P.A.

“Classic soccer.”

Sequim head coach Dave Brasher had a half-grimace, half-grin after Sequim’s second one-score loss to rival Port Angeles in as many Saturdays.

Roughrider sophomore Jesse Salgado rebounded his own shot on Sequim keeper Austin Wagner for the game’s only score as Port Angeles edged the visiting Wolves 1-0 at Civic Field on March 28.

“We had plenty of good chances,” Brasher said. “We totally dominated for 80 minutes but don’t get the results. (You’ve) got to hand it to P.A. — they defended well.”

Brasher said the Wolves had a shots advantage of about 25-6 but simply couldn’t put anything in the net.

Sequim had mixed results in two previous matches during the week. Sequim fell to Kingston 2-0 at home on March 24 but topped North Kitsap a day later, 3-1.

Sequim (1-2-0 in league play, 2-3-1- overall) was slated to play North Mason on March 31. The Wolves get a break from play during SHS’s spring break, then return to action April 14 at Port Townsend.

Baseball: SHS splits games

Sequim’s baseball squad got a key, come-from-behind 8-7 win at Bremerton on March 27.

The Wolves (1-0 in Olympic League play, 4-1 overall) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. After the Knights evened the score in the top of the seventh, Sequim put two runners on with one out in the bottom half of the frame. Daniel Harker hit a ground ball to short and Wolves baserunner Evan Hurn wiped out a double play at the bag, allowing Dusty Bates to score from second base.

Tanner Rhodefer, who pitched the first five innings, came back to strike out the final Bremerton batter with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

Harker had a two-run triple, Jake Sparks had a two-RBI single in the sixth and James Grubb went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Sequim saw a four-run lead evaporate in the final two innings in an 11-8 home loss to Klahowya on March 25.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Sequim’s Harker cleared the bases with a three-run double to center.

After Klahowya regained the lead with two runs in the fourth, Sequim tallied five runs in the fourth for an 8-4 advantage, capped by an RBI triple by Gavin Velarde.

Sequim’s Grubb worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth on the mound, but the visiting Eagles got to Wolves pitchers for five runs in the sixth inning and another two runs in the seventh. Eagle Nate Hough had a key two-run, pinch-hit single to put the Eagles ahead.

Sequim rallied in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners on before Klahowya recorded the final out.

The Wolves were scheduled to play at North Kitsap on March 31. They are at Olympic on April 2 and Port Angeles on April 6 before hosting Kingston on April 7.
