Sports roundup: Basketball squads finish week with wins

Wrestling celebrates seniors, compete in Lacey

The Sequim boys basketball team rebounded from a loss to powerhouse Bremerton on Jan. 13, to earn two wins against other league opponents.

One of those wins included a 57-53 victory over Kingston on Jan. 16 where the Wolves held on tight in the fourth quarter. They went into the quarter up 45-34 but the Buccaneers rallied with a 19-point fourth quarter to make the game close at the end.

“We let them come back on us. They played really tough, give Kingston credit,” said coach Craig Brooks.

Solomon Sheppard finished with 17 points while cracking 1,000 points in his high school career.

Mason Rapelje also had 17 points, shooting 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Andy Reynolds added nine points and played tough defense on Kingston’s 6-foot-8 post player Derek Bynum.

Brooks said Austin Limp and Nolan Bacchus also contributed on both ends of the floor.

Two days prior to the Kingston game, Sequim defeated Olympic 75-42 at home on Jan. 14, and a day prior the Wolves lost 79-56 at home to Bremerton, one of the favorites to battle for the state championship for the second straight year.

Bremerton came into Sequim with a 12-1 record (unbeaten in the Olympic League) and No. 6 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index. The Knights got off to a hot start and shot the ball well with seven 3-pointers, passed well inside and controlled the paint with 6-foot-10 Jay Beahan and 6-foot-8 Mark Lomuda either blocking or affecting a number of shots inside.

Brooks said he thought Sequim did well against Bremerton’s size.

Sequim rallied a couple of times, including a 10-0 run near the end of the first half with Hunter Tennell and Reynolds each contributing four points during that run. Sequim was able to cut the lead to 39-24 at halftime and still was down just 15 at 65-50 with 4 minutes left and a chance to pull off a comeback. The Knights were able to close out on a 14-6 run to keep Sequim at bay, however.

Girls finish with clean sweep of opponents

Sequim girls basketball team now holds a four-game winning streak following a strong week.

In Bremerton on Jan. 13, the Wolves nearly doubled the Knights in a 59-31 win with Jordyn Julmist having her best game of the season, coming within one assist of a rare quadruple-double with 14 points, 11 steals, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Coach Joclin Julmist said Kaiya Robinson also had her best game of the year with 14 points and three steals. Gracie Chartraw scored 13 to go with seven rebounds and three steals for the Wolves, while Hailey Wagner added 11 points and six rebounds.

Sequim got up 40-13 at halftime, then cruised in the second half, resting players for the following night.

In a make-up game the next night against Olympic, Sequim won 55-45 behind 27 points from Chartraw, and Wagner with 10 points and nine rebounds. Robinson also sank three 3-pointers, while Jordyn Julmist nabbed seven rebounds and made five assists.

To end the week at home, Sequim won 52-47 against Kingston in a close contest where they were tied at half 24-24 and 33-33 after three quarters before the Wolves took the lead for good.

“[It was a] good tough win for the girls during a tough week,” said Joclin Julmist.

Chartraw led the Wolves with 24 points and eight rebounds. Jordyn Julmist had another solid all-around game with seven points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.

Coach Julmist said she also played lock down defense all game.

Robinson had nine points, while Hailey Wagner had 12 rebounds and six points.

“Nevaeh Owens had a solid game off the bench scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds in crucial minutes,” Joclin Julmist said.

Sequim also dominated the boards 45-29.

With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-2 in the Olympic League in third place behind Port Angeles and Bainbridge.

Sequim was set to host North Mason on Tuesday, and travel to Clallam Bay on Jan. 21, and Bainbridge on Jan. 23.
