Chartraw helps Wolves rebound with win
The Sequim girls basketball team bounced back from a loss in Port Angeles earlier in the week with an emphatic 66-40 victory over North Kitsap at home on Jan. 9.
Gracie Chartraw especially came back from a rough shooting night on Jan. 6 against the Roughriders with a stat line nearing a quadruple-double against the Vikings. She hit four 3-pointers and scored 34 points to go with eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.
Chartraw shot 14-for-25 from the floor (56 percent).
The Wolves started out fast, getting out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter and outscored North Kitsap 20-10 in the fourth.
Jordyn Julmist had 15 points, while coach Jocyln Julmist said Hailey Wagner had an “amazing game on defense.” She had six points and seven rebounds.
Against Port Angeles on Jan. 6, Sequim had shooting struggles going 9-for-55. Chartraw kept the Wolves close early in the fourth quarter with six straight points to cut the Riders’ lead to 30-22 with 4:08 left in the game. However, Port Angeles’ Morgan Politika took over scoring five straight points with a 2-pointer and a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 35-22. That seemed to open up the Riders’ offense, as Becca Manson and Teanna Clark added a pair of 3-pointers and the Roughriders outscored the Wolves 14-0 down the stretch to win 44-22.
“We just couldn’t get anything to go. We were right there the whole game, but we just couldn’t get anything to fall,” Joclyn Julmist said.
Julmist commended the rebounding skills of Sequim though with Indi Mixon and Hailey Wagner leading the team with nine each.
The Wolves (4-2, 4-4) were set to play in Bremerton on Jan. 13, at Olympic tonight, Jan. 14, and then host Kingston on Friday, Jan. 16.
Boys take one against Vikings, too
The Sequim boys basketball got up huge early on North Kitsap in Poulsbo on Jan. 9, and withstood a barrage of 3-pointers in the second half to win on the road 70-60.
The Wolves got up 29-6 at the end of the first quarter, punctuated by a Zeke Schmadeke 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Wolves led 43-20 at half with Sequim’s Mason Rapelje getting a big 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Rapelje led the team in scoring with 24, making three 3-pointers. He added four steals.
Sequim got up by as much as 30 points. The Vikings started bombing away in the second half and scored 40 points in the final 16 minutes, but Sequim’s lead was too big for North Kitsap to catch up.
Solomon Sheppard had 18 points, adding eight rebounds and six assists. Zeke Schmadeke had his biggest scoring output of the year with 12 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and shooting 4-for-5 from the floor. Andy Reynolds added nine points and five rebounds.
Versus Port Angeles in the double-header following the girls’ game, Sequim narrowly lost 58-55 in a close, back-and-forth boys basketball battle between rivals.
With Port Angeles clinging to a 50-48 lead with 1:48 left in the game, the game came down to a huge 3-pointer by John Ruddell that gave the Roughriders their first two-possession lead since the third quarter.
Sheppard, who was a force all game on defense, hit a shot in response with 1:35 left, bringing the score back to one possession at 53-50.
Port Angeles’ Brody Pierce, who scored 21 points, hit another critical shot with 1:08 left, driving to the basket and laying the ball in while surrounded by Sequim defenders. That gave the Riders a two-possession lead again at 55-50 that proved too much for Sequim to overcome, as Port Angeles went on to win 58-55.
Sheppard led the Wolves with 21 points and four blocks, while Rapelje had 18 points.
Sequim was set to host Bremerton on Tuesday and Olympic today, Jan. 14, and travel to Kingston on Friday.
