It may be early in the season, but SHS tracksters Oscar Herrera and Waverly Shreffler are in full stride.

Herrera won both hurdles events while Shreffler won the 800-meter race and helped Sequim’s 4×400 relay take second at the Lil’ Norway Invitational on April 4 in Poulsbo.

Sequim’s boys tied for sixth place while the SHS girls were eighth in a field of 15 teams.

Herrera, who was a state meet qualifier last year as a sophomore, dominated both hurdles events. He posted a 16.08 finish in the 110-meter hurdles, a full second better than runner-up Ron Matro of Central Kitsap. His win in the 300-meter hurdles was even bigger, with  a 41.72 finish more than two seconds better than Nathanael Kjorme of North Kitsap (44.11).

Shreffler clocked in her 800 win at 2:21.95, more than a second better than runner-up Sara Naumann of Central Kitsap.

Heidi Vereide posted a second-place finish in the long jump with a 15-3.75 mark. She and Shreffler joined Gretchen Happe and Audrey Shingleton in the 4×400 squad that placed second behind Central Kitsap. Happe added a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter race.

Cheryl Armstrong posted a pair of strong finishes, taking fourth in the shot put (28-11, a personal best) and sixth in the discus (87-0).

On the boys’s side, Alex Barry threw a season-best 173 feet, 5 inches in the javelin for second place, second only to Hudson Keffer of Central Kitsap, the state 4A runner-up in 2014.

Rickey Gross took third in the pole vault (10-0), Kane Stoddard was fourth in the 100-meter sprint (12.14) and Logan Habner, a first-year track competitor, was fourth in the triple jump with a personal best (37-9.75).

Central Kitsap won the boys’ team title with 156 points, with host North Kitsap placing second (141 points) and Bremerton (82) taking third.

On the girls’ side, the host Vikings ran away with the title with 172 points, followed by Central Kitsap (134) and South Whidbey (67).

Select Sequim athletes are back in action April 11 at the Tacoma Invitational. The Wolves join Coupeville, Klahowya and the host Port Townsend Redhawks at an Olympic League meet April 16.
