Track & Field: Hurdler’s PRs highlight SHS efforts in Shelton

Herrera, Shreffler among 2A’s best as Wolves looking toward postseason

This wasn’t a postseason meet, but it sure had the star power and, hopefully for Sequim athletes, a preview of things to come.

SHS seniors Oscar Herrera, Waverly Shreffler and Jackson Oliver continued to hurdle, run and jump with the best in the state as Sequim’s top athletes took on some of the region’s top teams at the Shelton invitational on April 30.

Already one of the top hurdlers in Washington state, Herrera set a personal best in the 110-hurdles (14.73) to edge Malik Messiah of Todd Beamer, a 4A school, for the third-fastest mark among 2A boys this season and the first time Herrera’s broken the 15-second barrier.

Messiah then edged Herrera in the 300 hurdles by one one-hundredth of a second (38.71 to 38.72). The mark also was a personal best for Herrera and the second-best among 2A boys; Josh Braverman, a junior from River Ridge, owns both top hurdles marks this spring.

Jackson Oliver added a second- place finish in the high jump (6 feet 2 inches) and the pair joined Kane Stoddard and Logan Habner to place sixth in the 4×400 relay.

For their efforts, Sequim’s boys placed eighth at the invitational.

On the girls’ side, Shreffler continues to excel in the 800-meter race. She placed third in the event behind a pair of 4A stars and her mark of 2:19.40 improved upon her own state 2A girls  best time.

Shreffler joined Mercedes Woods, Audrey Shingleton and Kiara Pierson to take third in the 4×400 relay with a 4:11.59 finish, which ranks sixth-best among 2A schools this spring.

Sequim’s girls finished 22nd out of 40 teams.

Finishing off league season

Not a perfect ending, but a nice way to go out.

Following losses to North Kitsap and Olympic to open the season, Sequim’s boys and girls track squads streaked to eight consecutive league meet wins to close the 2016 campaign with 8-2 marks, capped by victories against North Mason and host Bremerton on April 28.

Oliver took top honors in the 1,600-meter race (4:44) and high jump (6-3) and second in the long jump (186), while teammate Grant Pierson won the 800 meters (2:18) and Habner won the triple jump (35-8). Taking second were Stoddard in the 400 meters (54.26), Quinton Johnson in the pole vault (9-6) and triple jump (34-1), Chris Whitaker in the discus (106 feet), Brenden Lauritzen in the shot put (39-10). Herrera won the 300-meter hurdles by three seconds.

On the girls’ side, Mattie Clark won both 100- (17.78) and 300-meter (56.07) hurdles, Shreffler topped the field in the 400 (1:01) and 800 (2:28), and Sequim swept all three relay races.

Other Sequim winners included Shingleton in the 1,600 meters (6:16), Elizabeth Rosales in the 3,200 (13:31), Hilary Holtrop in the triple jump (29-4), Rylee Gray in the long jump (14-5.5, a personal best) and Cheryl Armstrong in the discus (99 feet, a personal best).

Looking ahead

Sequim’s tracksters are at the Olympic League championships at North Kitsap (Poulsbo) on May 7.

The Wolves compete at the Olympic League sub-district meet at Bremerton on May 14, with top finishers advancing to the West Central District meet May 20-21, also in Bremerton, vying for state 2A tournament berths.

As in recent years, the 2A state track and field meet is at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
