Track & Field: SHS girls third, boys fourth at league meet

Sequim’s prep track and field postseason kicked off last week with the Olympic League Championships in Poulsbo on May 7, with Sequim’s girls placing third and SHS’s boys fourth out of the 11-team field.

Sequim senior Oscar Herrera continued dominance in the hurdles events with a first-place finish in the 110-high hurdles, breaking the 15-second mark for the second time in as many weeks at 14.84.

He followed that up with a personal record 38.63-second finish in the 300 hurdles, the second-best mark among 2A boys this season behind junior Josh Braverman of River Ridge (38.17).

Jackson Oliver earned a trio of top-four finishes last week, taking second in the high jump (6-0), third in the 1,600 meters (4:34) and fourth in the 800 meters (2:04). He also placed eighth in the long jump.

Fellow senior Wendall Lorenzen raced to a second-place finish in the 3,200 meters (10:37) and Logan Habner was fifth in the triple jump (38-3.5).

On the girls’ side, senior Waverly Shreffler posted another strong time in the 800 with a 2:21 mark for first place and took third at 400 meters (60.23).

Shreffler joined Mercedes Woods, Gretchen Happe and Kiara Pierson to take the 4×400 relay (4:12).

Teammate Audrey Shingleton, also a senior, was third at 1,600 meters (5:32) and fourth at 800 meters (2:31).

Sequim’s Elizabeth Sweet tied the freshman girls pole vault record at 8 feet 6 inches, placing third.

Katelyn Rogers, a senior, was fourth in the high jump with a 4-8 mark.

Junior Cheryl Armstrong was fourth in the discus (96-9).

Sequim’s 4×200 relay (Happe, Woods, Pierson and Emma Beeson) raced to a 1:49.80 finish, a season-best.

Senior Mattie Clark set personal bests last week, taking fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.22, fifth place) and 300 hurdles (53.20, eighth).


Looking ahead

Sequim’s track athletes compete at the Olympic League sub-district meet at Bremerton on May 14, with top finishers advancing to the West Central District meet May 20-21, also in Bremerton, vying for state 2A tournament berths.

As in recent years, the 2A state track and field meet is at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. This year’s event is set for May 26-28. See wiaa.com/subcontent.aspx?SecID=322 for a full schedule and fan information.
