Women’s basketball: Pirates power past Trojans

Peninsula dominates first half, stays unbeaten in conference play

This weather up here? Looking good.

Peninsula climbed atop the North Division standings, sharing the division’s top spot with Skagit Valley after a pair of conference wins last week.

On Jan. 13, playing against a winless Whatcom squad, No. 5-ranked Peninsula (3-0 in NWAC play, 12-4 overall) outlasted a depleted Orca team to knock off their visitors 83-60.

Imani Smith had 22 points and eight assists in just 25 minutes to lead Peninsula. Zhara Laster added a solid all-around effort with 17 points, six rebounds and four steals, Cherish Moss had 13 points and Daijhan Cooks chipped in with 10 points.

The Orcas, playing with just seven players suited, kept things interesting through the first half as PC led by two (18-16) before pulling away.

Lindsey Honeycutt led all scorers with 26 points for Whatcom.

On Jan. 16, the Pirates make quick work of Everett’s Trojans with a 77-55 home victory.

Cierra Moss led all PC scorers with 17 points while Jenise McKnight came off the bench for 12 points and Cooks added 10. Laster contributed six points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

PC led 42-27 by halftime and held their visitors to just 19-of-61 (31 percent) shooting.

Breezy Shore led the Trojans with 21 points.

Looking ahead

The Pirates are on the road for the next two contests, taking on Olympic on Jan. 20 and No. 4-ranked Bellevue on Jan. 23. PC hosts Skagit Valley on Jan. 27.
