The Chemeketa Storm could have used a bit after the visiting Peninsula Pirates ran roughshod in an 11-0 P.C. victory on Sept. 28 in Salem, Ore.
Bri Afoa scored in the first four minutes and completed a hat trick with two more in the second half as the Pirates remained untouched (6-0-0) in conference action.
"We’ve kind of challenged the girls to really focus on trying to doing the best we can do and … (not) letting teams off the hook or going through the motions," Peninsula coach Kanyon Anderson said. "We play harder against each other at practice and go out and play in a way we’ll feel proud of. They’re starting to understand that concept."
Mary Pierce and Brenda Torres had two scores each while Bronte Fitzsimmons had three assists to up her NWAACC-leading total to 12.
Kasie Lough needed just one save in recording the shutout, her second of the season.
Tripping Tacoma
The Pirates took control of a match at Tacoma quickly and dominated throughout, topping the Titans 8-1 on Sept. 25.
Afoa had two of her three scores in the first 11 minutes while teammate Shelbi Vienna-Hallam added a pair of scores in the blowout.
"Tacoma’s not a bad team — we just played really well against them," Anderson said.
Fitzsimmons set up the Pirates’ first three goals and scored P.C.’s fourth.
"Bronte is really quick — she can create a lot of chances with jumping on loose balls and the creative runs she makes," Anderson said.
The lone blemish came early in the second half when Tacoma’s Laura Deaton found the net.
Coming up
Peninsula hosts Highline today, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m.
"Highline is quite good. They keep the ball really well and are organized," Anderson said. "It’s going to be a fantastic game."
Anderson said Kelsie Ng, a midfielder who was leading Peninsula in goals and assists as a freshman in 2011 before tearing an ACL, may see her first action in more than a year. Ng spent a year rehabbing the injury, Anderson said.
The Pirates host Clark at noon on Oct. 5 and Olympic at 2 p.m. on Oct. 9.
