Track & Field: SHS teams get final postseason tune-up

Second to just one.

Sequim’s boys track and field athletes wrapped up a strong regular season with wins against Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Coupeville on April 26 to finish with a 10-1 record, their lone loss coming to league meet champion North Kitsap.

Sequim’s track teams will see the Vikings again this week when North Kitsap hosts the Olympic League meet on May 5.

At last week’s final league meet, Sequin’s Murray Bingham posted a pair of wins — the 400 (52.44, a personal best) and 1600 (4:53) — and with teammates Logan Laxson, Darren Salazar and Alec Shingleton helped Sequim’s 4×400 relay squad post a win in 3:34.

With teammate Riley Martin absent, Sequim’s Fischer Jensen swept both 110- and 300-meter hurdle races, including a personal record 42.60 in the 300.

Riley Cowan (147 feet, 3 inches) and Payton Glasser went 1-2 in the javelin (130-11, a personal best). Glasser was also second in the discus (105-5), and Cowan tied for second in the shot put (38-2).

Shingleton scored a win in the 800-meter race (2:04); teammate Jakob Pyeatt was runner-up at 2:21.

Salazar raced to two runner-up finishes, in the 100- and 200-meter races (11.69 and 23.39). Liam Byrne was second in the pole vault (10-6) with teammate Andrew Cambalik in third with a personal-best 9-6 vault.

Trey Brouillard was second in the 400 meters (56.41). Laxson added third-place finish in the long jump (18 feet), and Pyeatt was third at 1600 meters with a persona record 5:04 finish.

Sequim’s boys racked up 685 team points, with Port Angeles in second (53), Coupeville third (47.5) and Port Townsend fourth (6).

On the girls’ side, Port Angeles’ Gracie Long paced the Roughriders with three wins (400, 800, high jump) as PA tallied 90 team points to out-pace Coupeville (47), Port Townsend (27) and Sequim (16).

The losses drops Sequim’s season record to 2-9.

Elizabeth Sweet posted the Lady Wolves’ lone win, topping the field in the pole vault (9-6); teammate Kianna Miller was third with a personal-best 8-0 vault.

Sequim’s 4×100 relay team of Kristinna Barnet, Mary McAleer, Telicia Busby and Shayli Schuman placed second (54.52). Barnet (800, 2:43) and Schuman (100 hurdles, 16.78) each earned fourth-place finishes.

Wolves compete at Shelton Invite

Sequim’s Bingham, a junior, added to his strong season with a first-place finish in the 800 meters (2:00) and Sweet placed second in the pole vault with a personal best at the 58th Shelton Invitational on April 28.

Sweet cleared 10 feet 6 inches to finish just behind Tawni Blankenship of North Beach.

Bingham added a second place finish in the 1600 meters, finishing in 4:30 — less than three seconds behind A.J. Chopra of Todd Beamer High School.

Cowan threw just short of his season-best but still placed first in the javelin with a 158-foot, 3-inch toss.

Martin took fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.85) while Jensen was sixth in the 300 hurdles (43.33).

Sequim’s 4×400 relay team (Shingleton, Salazar, Martin, Bingham) took seventh out of 15 teams with a 3:38 mark.

Laxson was third in the freshman 400-meter race (55.02) and fourth in the frosh 100-meter competition (11.94).
