A sweet end to a bittersweet season.
The Wolves capped a campaign fraught with injuries and close losses with a 1-0 win against rival Port Angeles on Monday night, getting a second-half goal from McKenzie Bentz for the clincher. Vianey Cadenas had the assist.
Sequim finished in a virtual tie with North Mason for seventh place in the nine-team Olympic League; the teams split two league games. “It was a good way to end it,” Sequim co-coach Victor Lancheros said. “We missed my goal by one win (of five, Sequim’s 2012 total) but with so many injuries, it was tough.”
Sequim’s junior varsity also earned a win against the Roughriders, a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Nicole Anders and Sophie Radford and two assists by Mia Delguzzi-Flores.
The Wolves won two of their final three games to close out 2013. Sequim defended its home turf with a
3-0 win against Port Town-send on Oct. 22. Makayla Bentz, Cadenas and Maeve Harris each had scores, while Leslie Cisneros and Shelby Lott had assists. Coaches praised defensive work by Cadenas, Audrey Shingleton, Mattie Clark and Lisa Radford.
On Oct. 24, Sequim dropped a 3-0 decision to Bremerton.
“We have a lot of strong talent that will remain on the team and also a lot of strong talent coming up,” Julie Lancheros said.
