Track and field: Timberwolf girls first, boys third at league final

Sequim High’s track and field future is bright, if the middle school program is any indication.
The Sequim Middle School track and field squads scored a pair of top-three finishes — including a girls title — at the Olympic Middle School Track and Field Championships in Port Angeles on June 5.
The Timberwolf girls tallied 13 top-three individual finishes to score 147 points, edging Poulsbo Middle School (137.5) for first place. Woodward Middle School (Bainbridge Island) was third with 65 points and Port Angeles’ Stevens Middle School took fourth (61).
On the boys’ side, Sequim placed third with 95.5 points, behind league champ Poulsbo (143) and Woodward (103). Stevens was fourth (64) out of nine competing schools.
Both Timberwolf boys and girls 4×100 teams won their respective races, with SMS’s boys (49.65) cruising to a win by more than three seconds over second-place Chimacum, and SMS’s girls tying a meet record with a 54.91 mark.
In girls competition, Sequim’s Jolene Vaara won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet 6 inches. She also placed second in the 75-meter hurdles (13.28) and second in the 200-meter hurdles (32.45).
SMS teammate Olivia Duran won the 200-meter dash in 28.33 seconds, placed second in the 100-meter dash (13.42) and was fourth in the long jump (13-5.5).
Jelissa Julmist won the discus throw with a 71-3 mark; teammate Trinity Gaither was second (58-11). Julmist also placed second in the shot put (32-0.25).
By just 0.01 of a second, Sequim’s Hannah Bates took the 60-meter dash crown in 8.82 over Poulsbo’s Kyra Slate. Bates added a third place finish in the javelin (77-10).
Macy Cogburn second place in the 400-meter run in 1:06.47, while teammate Kaitlyn Bloomenrader took second in the 1,600-meter race (5:54). Taryn Johnson took second in a close 800-meter run, finishing in 2:39 — about 0.2 of a second back of champ Lily Curtis of Woodward.
On the boy’s side, Sequim’s Harvey Samiloua and Espn Judd took the top two places in the shot put, with Samiloua’s mark at 40-11.5 and Judd throwing 37-3.
Sam FitzGerald-Hagan edged Stevens’ Bryson Graham for the 60-meter dash title (7.84 to 7.89), and SMS teammate Kylle Tiaga won the 200-meter dash in 25.20 seconds, 0.03 of a second ahead of Poulsbo’s Matt Mullen.
Sequim’s David Harris took second in the discus throw (103-8.5). Teammate Braiden Kitchen was third in the 75-meter hurdles (13.19) and third in the long jump (15-11.25).
