This time of year there is a bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables to choose from at the market. Here are a few highlights:
Greg and Marilynn with Sea Basket Farm will have artichokes, beans, shelling peas, beets and kale
Noah with River Run will have lettuce, radish, beets and cauliflower
Elli with Joy Farm will have potatoes, cucumbers, garlic, cabbage and broccoli
Emily with Emily’s Flowers will have raspberries, blueberries, kohlrabi and fresh bouquets of flowers
Beets are especially delicious this time of year. They are rich in folate, potassium, iron, vitamin C, and manganese. Eating beetroot is known to reduce inflammation and help lower blood pressure.
They can be prepared in many ways: steamed, boiled, roasted, and raw beets can be grated into salads or soups. Don’t toss the beet greens, they can be steamed and make an excellent side dish.
If you have never tried roasted beet, here is a simple, must-try recipe:
Roasted Beets with Dill and Goat/Feta Cheese
Ingredients:
Beets, scrubbed and trimmed
Fresh or dried dill
Olive or avocado oil
Salt and pepper
Goat or feta cheese
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400F.
Peel and cut the beets into about 3/4-inch wedges, drizzle olive oil, sprinkle dill, salt and pepper to taste.
Layer the beets evenly on a baking dish and cover with aluminum foil; cook for about 25-30 minutes.
If you decide to use the goat or feta cheese, sprinkle some over the beets as soon as they come out of the oven.
To ‘the Birds’
This weekend is “Going to the Birds” at the Sequim Farmers Market. The Discovery Bay Wild Birds Rescue will be at the market and they will bring along a few wild birds for all to see. This event is sponsored by Wild Birds Unlimited – Nature Shop and Stonewear Art.
After the market, drop by Wild Birds Unlimited on US Highway 101 in Gardiner and talk with the experts about how you can turn your backyard into a bird feeding habitat, plus they have a great assortment of fountains and so much more.
The Wild Birds Unlimited garden area is so serene, a great little escape to just sit and watch the birds.
The Summer Live Music Series continues with Nightingale performing from 11a.m.-2 p.m. Donna Rankin and Mary Clock’s music would best be categorized as Americana as it has its roots in folk, rock, country, gospel and more. The most striking aspect of their music is their harmonic blends, which can be anywhere from hauntingly beautiful to delightfully sweet.
