Music Where You Park continues at grange

KSQM 91.5 FM’s Music Where You Park series continues with local country singer Buck Ellard performing on Tuesday, June 29, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

Individually created banana splits from the Sequim Prairie Grange and hot dogs from the Sequim Valley Lions will be available after 5 p.m. Ellard’s recorded interview with music will start at 6 p.m. Sit and listen or enjoy a little two-step dance around your vehicle.

Each Tuesday evening through July 27, KSQM spotlights a different musician in an announced location at various locations of the Olympic Peninsula. Free drawings for prizes will awarded and winners announced over the air. Guests are invited to stroll the grounds of most locations and listen to tunes; food and beverages will be available, or bring a picnic supper.

Explore ‘Comic-Book Reality’ with NOLS Zoom presentation

As part of the Summer Reading Program, the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) presents “Comic-Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation,” presented by Humanities Washington speaker T. Andrew Wahl, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, on Zoom. Register at nols.org or contact a local NOLS branch to receive Zoom link.

Since their debut in the 1930s, comic books have been a regular part of the pop-culture landscape. “While often dismissed as escapist entertainment, these pulp treasures also provide a fascinating lens through which to view our nation’s past, present, and potential future,” program organizers say.

In this interactive presentation, Wahl — a Humanities Washington speaker, journalist and educator — explores how everything from social movements to business concerns to changing demographics have shaped the reality seen in the pages of comics, drawing from comics including “Black Panther,” “Wonder Woman,” “Captain America” and others.

‘Fire and Flight’ art show set

Sequim artist Liz Harper hosts “Fire and Flight,” an art show and sale from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 3, at 141 Flying Cloud St.

Attendees are asked to park on the street and wear a mask if unvaccinated.

Woodturners to host guest from France

The Strait Turners Woodturning Club meets at noon on Tuesday, June 29, on Zoom.

The group’s presenter this month is Laurent Niclot from France, who will be showing how to turn a square piece and hollow the piece using miniature hollowing tools and carving it. Then he will burn and sand the piece.

Niclot will also talk about a few differences between French turning and American turning tools, carving and texturing.

The club, established in 2016, generally meets the last Tuesday of the month at the Gardiner Community Center; club members say they do not have a date yet for when they will resume in-person meetings.

For the Zoom information or more about the club, call Jackie Le Doux at 360-457-5172 (from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and after 5 p.m.) or 360-452-5673 Between 12:30-5 p.m.).
