In a brief, two-game non-league schedule to open the 2017 season, Sequim faced two very different opponents and wound up with a split.

The Wolves battled 2A semifinalist Archbishop Murphy to a 1-1 draw into the second half until the visiting Wildcats broke through for a 3-1 win on Sept. 7.

Sophomore Jessica Dietzman had the lone score for Sequim, knotting the game at halfway through the second half, after the Wildcat keeper misplayed a ball.

Two days later, facing a team that struggled to a 2-8-1 mark last season, Sequim knocked off the visiting Chimacum Cowboys, 5-1.

Dietzman broke a scoreless tie in the 37th minute, and freshman Natayla James made it 2-0 a minute later.

“The girls seemed to struggle to find their rhythm until the end of the first half,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said.

The momentum continued in Sequim’s favor in the second half as sophomore Daisy Ryan scored two goals (44th and 65th minute), and junior Nathalie Torres netted a goal in the 72nd minute.

Olivia Hare and Bryanna Dominguez split goalkeeping duties for Sequim.

Sequim tallied 10 shots on goal against Chimacum.

The Wolves (1-1-0) were scheduled to open Olympic League play this week at Olympic on Sept. 12.

Sequim hosts Coupeville on Sept. 14 and North Mason on Sept. 19 before playing rival North Kitsap in Poulsbo on Sept. 21.
