With just a few league matches remaining in the season, Sequim’s golf squads are back in a familiar place — atop the Olympic League.

Sequim’s girls got a clutch win against Olympic, the defending league champs, while the Wolves’ boys earned a big win against Bremerton to close the week, with both SHS teams (boys 7-0, girls 6-0) remaining undefeated heading into this week’s matches.

On April 10, Sarah Shea paced the Sequim girls with a nine-hole round of 36 as the Wolves avenged their lone league loss of 2017 with a 173-204 win over Olympic.

It was Sequim’s only league loss in the past three seasons.

“I am so happy for the girls,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said. “I know last year’s loss stung. It was nice to see them play well and get the win. It was a complete team effort. The girls total team score was the lowest total of the year by seven shots.”

Backing Shea, Sequim’s Samantha Smith (42), Yana Hoesel (46), Maddie Uranga (49) and Jessica German (62) all had career low nine-hole scores on The Cedars’ front nine.

Sequim’s boys picked up a pair of wins the same day at The Cedars, scoring a combined 300 over 18 holes to top both Klahowya (351) and Olympic (364).

Paced by Paul Jacobsen’s 71, the Wolves looked strong in their first 18-hole match of the campaign. Blake Wiker finished with a 73 and both Josiah Carter and Andrew Vanderberg carded rounds of 78.

Garett Betzing led Klahowya with a round of 82 while Chris Duckworth paced Olympic with an 83.

Sequim’s golf squads swept Bremerton at the Knight’s home course at Gold Mountain on April 12.

On the girls’ side, Shea was the medalist with a six-over-par 42 while Uranga had a career-best 46. Smith shot a 43 and Hoesel carded a 51.

Because of darkness the Sequim and Bremerton boys finished 14 of their scheduled 18 holes, and the Wolves came away with a 249-291 victory.

Medalist honors went to Bryce Kahle from Bremerton with a 2-over 57. Sequim’s Vanderberg was a shot behind at 58 while Wiker was third with a 59.

Looking ahead

Sequim’s girls were scheduled to play in the Burlington Edison Invite on April 16 (results were not available at press time) and to take on Klahowya at home on April 17.

Both Sequim squads host Kingston on April 19 and Port Angeles on April 24.

The SHS boys are at the Duke Streeter Invite in Port Angeles on April 27.

The Olympic League championship is set for Tuesday, May 1, at The Cedars at Dungeness.
