OPAA meeting set

The Olympic Peninsula Art Association’s presenter for April is David Johannessohn. The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, April 25, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave.

Johannessohn is best known for the innovative, artistic and detailed designs he creates and produces from a vast array of wood, association members said. “An industrial arts and architectural drafting educator, he stressed the relationship of form and function in all areas of design which can be seen in his wood creations,” OPAA members said.

See sequimarts.org/news for more about the club.

Sequim artist features in series kick-off

Front St., Port Angeles. Participating artists have the option to then raffle off a piece of their collection with proceeds going to the charity or organization of their choice.

The series kicks off 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, with Sequim-based water colorist Beverly Beighle, who will be speaking on her “Journey to Watercolor.” Proceeds from her raffle will go to the Dungeness River Audubon Center.

Woodturners host special meeting

Club members John Elliott and Dick Bumgarner will present at the next meeting of the Strait Turners Woodturning Club, set for noon Tuesday, April 30, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

One of the most requested topics for a club presentation in a survey of club members last year was “tool control for better turning.” The presentation covers a range of details of the craft of woodturning that make for better “tool control” and thus for better turning, no matter the skill level. Club members will have home reference handouts to distribute as well.

The meeting also features a wood auction.

New turners are welcome. Cost is a $5 fee at the door for non-club members.

Sequim artist selected for international exhibit

The Northwest Watercolor Society announced last week that Sequim artist Patricia Starr has been accepted as one of the 60 artists selected for the 79th-annual International Open Exhibition. Her painting will be on display April 30-July 11 at Shoreline City Hall in Shoreline, just north of Seattle.

Starr entered her painting titled “Sacred Geometry” that features beach rocks on Sequim Bay in September. She is a former member of both the Blue Whole Gallery and ARTfusion of Sequim, and the Heatherton Gallery of Port Angeles.

Arts council seeks jury members

The Sequim City Arts Advisory Commission is seeking two community members to participate in the art jury process for its quarterly art exhibits at City Hall. The commission has acted as the jury for all shows and is looking to open the process to include community members starting with the next quarterly show, “The Beach,” scheduled for exhibit July-September.

If selected, community jury members will serve for one year and be asked to participate in a minimum of three juries. Practicing artists of any discipline or persons interested in the arts are encouraged to apply.

The application is on the city website (www.sequimwa.gov) or available at the concierge desk in the Sequim City Hall lobby. Applications are due by May 15. Interviews and final appointments will be completed by June 10 and the first jury will take place in mid-June.
